I am delighted to learn of your consideration of joining First Presbyterian Church—Falls City, where all are welcomed, loved, cherished, and affirmed. We look forward to answering any questions you may have.
Over the years, I have considered how to briefly explain what membership brings to our members. If I may, here is some guidance for individuals considering membership. We at First Presbyterian want to emphasize our church's loving and affirming nature (PCUSA). Here are four thoughts that I believe are important investments that will bring forth joy and happy expectations.
To Show Up
Being the Rain to the Garden
Expanding on the garden analogy, consider how each individual's presence at church functions as the rain that nourishes. Rain does not merely water the plants; it awakens dormant seeds, encourages growth, and sustains the garden's life. Similarly, when members consistently show up, they bring new ideas, energy, and life into the church. Each member's presence contributes to a vibrant, dynamic community that thrives on collective spirit and participation. Being present means more than just filling a seat; it's about engaging fully, bringing your soul and heart to communal worship, and actively participating in the garden’s flourishing.
To Step Up
Steering Together
Delving deeper into the boat-steering metaphor, envision the church as a vast sea of opportunities and responsibilities that need navigating. To step up is to take the helm at times, guiding part of this journey through your actions and leadership. It recognizes when the water turns rough and more hands are needed on deck, volunteering for tasks without waiting to be asked, and showing initiative in areas where you can see your strengths will make a difference. Participation in this sense creates collective ownership of the journey; it fosters a deep sense of belonging and purpose, as every member becomes essential to steering the church community towards its shared goals and destination.
To Give
Planting Seeds for Future Harvests
In the context of stewardship, giving is like investing in fertile ground for future harvests. It's understood that what we sow today may not reap tomorrow, but inevitably, it will nourish future generations. Your time, talents, and treasures are seeds that can grow into initiatives that support the needy, educational programs that enlighten, and missions that spread the church's message far and wide. This reciprocity of giving forms the backbone of a sustainable community, where resources are pooled together to achieve more than any individual could alone. The beauty of this giving is that it mirrors the selfless love taught in faith, creating a culture of generosity that extends beyond the church walls.
To Learn and Grow
Embarking on a Sacred Journey
Finally, equating your faith journey to an adventure underscores the church community's endless possibilities for personal and spiritual growth. This journey is not linear but a spiral, where with each cycle, you come closer to understanding your place in the world and God's plan. The church provides the resources, support, and companionship necessary for this exploration, but the path is yours to walk. As you learn from scriptures, sermons, and each other, you also grow by sharing your experiences and insights. This mutual exchange enriches everyone, fostering a community that evolves together in faith. Learning and growing in this way ensures that the adventure is not just about reaching a destination but about becoming more compassionate, understanding, and spiritually aware individuals along the way.
I hope these four points capture the essence of engaging fully with First Presbyterian Church—Falls City and the community. Each member's journey must be personal and communal, receiving from and contributing to the church in a cycle of faith, hope, and love. I welcome your questions and the opportunity to discuss our positions within PC(USA).
Blessings to you this day!
